RANK 03 OF 8 · CLOUD APPLICATION RECOVERY

Commvault Cloud Rewind review: cloud application recovery, formerly Appranix

Short answer

Commvault Cloud Rewind ranks third (70.7). It recovers whole application stacks, data included, across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, and scores 88 on recovery automation. It publishes no price and no drift detection, and it markets itself as a way to skip infrastructure as code rather than to produce it.

What does Cloud Rewind restore after an incident?

Cloud Rewind captures point-in-time, in-sync copies of cloud workloads and the configuration around them, and restores the application across compute, storage, networking, databases and security. The G2 product description lists VMs, containers, Kubernetes clusters, cloud volumes, security groups, load balancers, RDS and network configurations, with restore to the production VPC or to isolated recovery environments. Commvault bought the product with Appranix, a deal it announced in April 2024; appranix.com now redirects to Cloud Rewind.

How does Cloud Rewind score on each criterion?

Infrastructure coverage beyond data 20%84

Covers compute, storage, networking, databases and security on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud; the G2 description adds containers, Kubernetes clusters, security groups and load balancers.

Recovery automation 16%88

Automated point-in-time capture and one-step recovery of multi-layer application stacks are the core of the product.

Cross-region and cross-account rebuild 14%78

Restores to the production VPC or to isolated recovery environments; cross-account steps are not detailed on the product page.

Drift and change history 12%50

Point-in-time copies give a history, but drift detection against a known-good state is not published.

Restore as code (IaC generation) 10%60

Commvault says recovery environments are programmed with IaC, while marketing the product as a way to skip IaC; a Terraform export is not published.

Data protection depth and cloud DR track record 18%80

Captures in-sync copies of workloads including data, backed by a vendor that has sold backup since 1996.

Pricing transparency 10%25

No public price; available through the AWS, Azure and Google Cloud marketplaces, otherwise Contact sales.

Weighted total 70.7 out of 100, rank 03 of 8. How we score

Where does Cloud Rewind fall short?

Pricing is Contact sales or a marketplace listing, so it scores 25 on transparency. There is no published drift detection or change history against a known-good state. Commvault says it skips complex IaC, which is convenient during an incident but leaves teams without reviewable code for the rebuilt environment. The product page gives no RTO or RPO figure. Identity and DNS are not itemized on the pages we read.

What does Cloud Rewind cost?

Contact sales. Listed on the AWS, Azure and Google Cloud marketplaces.

Who should shortlist Cloud Rewind?

Commvault customers who want cloud application recovery from the vendor that already holds their backups, and teams that want recovery of a full stack, data and configuration together, without maintaining Terraform for it. It is also the only product here that pairs application rebuild with a large data backup business across all three major clouds.
