What is cloud recovery posture management?

Short answer

Cloud recovery posture management (sometimes called cloud resilience posture management) is the continuous measurement of whether each part of a cloud estate could be recovered: whether its configuration and data are captured, its dependencies known, and its recovery tested against a target. It turns recoverability from a yearly audit into a live score.

What does cloud recovery posture management check?

  • Coverage: which resources and applications have configuration and data captured, and which do not.
  • Dependencies: whether the network, identity, DNS and managed services an application needs are captured with it.
  • Freshness: how old the latest capture is, against the RPO you set.
  • Readiness: whether a recovery has been tested and how long it took, against the RTO.
  • Drift: whether the running environment still matches the known-good state you would recover to.
  • Evidence: whether you can show all of the above to an auditor or regulator.

How is it different from cloud security posture management?

Cloud security posture management (CSPM) asks whether the environment is configured safely today. Recovery posture asks whether you could get it back tomorrow. They share inputs, such as a full resource inventory and configuration history, but measure different risks.

Which vendors offer recovery posture scoring?

Firefly describes cloud resilience posture management scoring and a real-time view of cyber recovery readiness, including validation of backups, replication, dependencies and failover paths. ControlMonkey's free assessment produces a resilience score for up to 50,000 cloud assets. We did not find a comparable named capability on the other vendors' pages we reviewed.

What should a buyer ask for?

A per-application view, not only an account-level score; separate configuration and data freshness; evidence of the last successful recovery test; and an export an auditor can read. See the buyer's checklist for the full list.

Frequently asked questions

Is cloud recovery posture management the same as cloud resilience posture management?

They describe the same idea. 'Cloud resilience posture management' is the term some vendors use; 'cloud recovery posture management' is the more common search term.

Do I need a separate tool for it?

Not always. Some infrastructure recovery platforms include posture scoring. If yours does not, the inventory, backup and test records it needs usually exist in other tools.

Does a posture score prove I can recover?

No. It shows gaps. Only a tested recovery proves it.
